Follow My Lead: Search Me, O God

Yesterday we asked an important question:

Am I willing to listen?

Today Jesus asks another:

Am I willing to learn from what is being revealed?

At first, that sounds simple.

Until we realize how often God uses other people to reveal what's happening inside us.

Most of us imagine God searching our hearts during a quiet prayer time, a church service, or while reading Scripture.

And He certainly does.

But I've discovered that some of God's greatest lessons come through relationships.

Family.

Friends.

Coworkers.

Spouses.

Children.

Neighbors.

People have a way of exposing what's already living inside us.

When someone offends me, I discover whether patience is present.

When someone disagrees with me, I discover whether pride is present.

When someone succeeds, I discover whether jealousy is present.

When someone hurts me, I discover whether forgiveness is present.

The offense didn't create those things.

It revealed them.

That's why relationships are such powerful teachers.

They help us see ourselves more clearly.

David prayed:

"Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me..."

Psalm 139:23-24

What if one of the ways God answers that prayer is through people?

Not because they are perfect.

Not because every criticism is correct.

But because relationships reveal what still needs attention.

As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.

Sharpening isn't always comfortable.

Neither is growth.

But both are necessary.

Paul encourages us to:

"Continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling."

Philippians 2:12

Notice he doesn't say work for your salvation.

He says work it out.

God does the saving.

We do the growing.

And much of that growing happens in relationship.

The Shepherd isn't simply teaching us how to become better individuals.

He's teaching us how to love.

How to forgive.

How to serve.

How to encourage.

How to speak truth.

How to receive correction.

How to become the kind of people who help bring heaven to earth.

And here's the beautiful part.

The process isn't only about allowing others to help us grow.

It's also about helping others grow.

Sometimes we are the student.

Sometimes we are the teacher.

Sometimes we are being sharpened.

Sometimes we are holding the sharpening stone.

Either way, growth happens together.

That's how God designed it.

So the next time someone frustrates you, challenges you, or offends you, pause before reacting.

Ask yourself:

What might God be revealing in me right now?

Because the Shepherd often speaks through the people He places along the path.

Make It Personal

Think about a recent conflict, frustration, or offense.

What emotions surfaced?

What might those emotions reveal about your heart?

Is there an area where God may be inviting you to grow?

How can you help someone else grow without shame, judgment, or condemnation?
