Follow My Lead: He Called Her by Name

John 20:11–18
"Jesus said to her, 'Mary.' She turned toward Him and cried out in Aramaic, 'Rabboni!' (which means 'Teacher')." — John 20:16
The Encounter
Mary stood outside the empty tomb weeping.
Her world had fallen apart. The One she loved was gone. The future she had imagined was shattered, and all she could see was loss. Her tears blurred her vision so completely that she didn't recognize the risen Jesus standing right in front of her.
Isn't that often where grief, fear, disappointment, and confusion leave us? We become so consumed by what we've lost or what we cannot understand that we lose sight of the One who has never left us.
Jesus didn't begin by correcting Mary. He didn't tell her to stop crying or remind her of everything He had promised. He simply asked a question, allowing her to express the ache of her heart.
Then He spoke one word.
"Mary."
Everything changed.
She recognized His voice before she fully understood her circumstances.
The voice of the Shepherd did what no explanation could do. It quieted her fear, restored her peace, and brought clarity in the middle of her confusion.
Jesus knew exactly who she was.
More importantly, Mary realized she was known.
That is where every journey back to the Father begins.
Make It Personal
Have you ever noticed how easily fear, disappointment, shame, or uncertainty become the loudest voices in your life?
When those voices grow louder, it's easy to believe they are telling the truth. We begin rehearsing them until they shape how we see ourselves, our circumstances, and even God.
But before Jesus explained anything to Mary, He reminded her of something far more important.
She belonged to Him.
The Shepherd still calls His sheep by name today.
Before He changes our circumstances, He invites us back into relationship. Before He gives us answers, He reminds us that we are known, loved, and never alone.
Perhaps today Jesus is speaking your name—not with condemnation or disappointment, but with the same gentleness that brought Mary from fear to peace.
Pause for a moment.
Can you hear His voice of peace above all the others?
Practice Today
Find a quiet place and simply sit with the Lord for a few minutes.
Picture yourself standing beside Mary at the empty tomb.
Imagine Jesus turning toward you and speaking your name.
Resist the urge to rush ahead or solve your problems. Instead, receive the gift of being fully known and deeply loved.
As you go through your day, whenever anxiety, shame, fear, or discouragement begins speaking, pause and quietly pray:
"Jesus, help me hear Your voice above every other voice."

As you read, ask yourself:
What do I learn about the character of God from these passages?
What kind of voice does the Shepherd have?
Which voices have I been listening to lately?
How might my life change if I truly believed I am known by name and belong to Him?
